The two of you

Eight classical threads, kootas, each read as character, with anything the tradition flags named alongside what settles it. The classical total is there too, at the bottom in the smallest type on the screen, which is about how much of the answer it is.

These are drawings, not photographs, rebuilt from the app’s own source, so the palette is its palette and every sentence is one its writers produce. The times and the thread values are computed by the same arithmetic the app runs, on a date checked against a published almanac. Real captures replace them at launch.

Why it reads differently

Computed, not written in advance.

Every sentence in Kaal is derived from a position in the sky at your minute of birth, and from where the sky is now. Nothing is drawn from a library of twelve.

Hours, not just days

The later muhūrta literature, written centuries after the astronomers and followed far more in the south of India than the north, names a handful of daily windows: three to hold off in, one that favours a start. Each is a fraction of your own sunrise-to-sunset, the pause windows an eighth of it and the favourable one a fifteenth. They land at a different clock time in every town and at a different length in every season, which is why so few apps outside the tradition carry them at all. Kaal computes yours.

Your exact minute, your exact place

Down to a pin on a village no database lists. The rising sign turns over twelve times a day, in some places in under an hour, so the hour is not a detail.

It works with the plane door shut

The astronomy runs on your phone. No server computes your chart, because no server ever sees it.

Matching that reads as character

Temperament, instinct, how two minds meet: eight of them, each described in its own sentence. Anything the tradition flags is named together with the classical reason it is softened, which is the half the cheap readings leave out. The out-of-36 count is there too, in the smallest type on the screen, which is about how much of the answer it is.

It finds you in the morning

One notification before your day starts, with the reading and the hours in it, and the next window on your lock screen while it runs. Off until you ask for it, and off again in one tap.

Where this comes from

Some of this is three thousand years old. The arithmetic is fifteen hundred. The answer was never portable.

Almost nothing in Kaal is new. The definitions it computes were fixed by Indian astronomers over about two millennia, and they were written down as arithmetic, not as omens, and not as a list to look things up in. What the tradition could not do was work them out for your minute, in your town. That is the only part this app supplies.

  1. The Vedic corpus, before it was written down

    The Moon's path was given names.

    The nakṣatra list, the lunar mansions the Moon crosses, one for roughly each day of its circuit, is named in the Taittirīya Saṃhitā, older than any surviving Indian text about how to compute anything. There it is a list of star groups, not a measurement: cutting the circle into twenty-seven equal segments of 13°20′ came later, with the astronomers below. The Atharvaveda's list has twenty-eight, adding Abhijit, which is why Kaal reads your birth star as one of twenty-seven and also computes a window called Abhijit. Its quarter is one of that segment's four.

  2. Lagadha · a sky of roughly 1400 BCE, in a text usually placed 700–400 BCE

    Time-reckoning became a discipline with rules.

    The Vedāṅga Jyotiṣa, attributed to Lagadha, is the oldest surviving Indian work devoted to reckoning time. Its date is genuinely disputed, and in two separate ways that are easy to conflate: the solstice it records back-computes to somewhere near 1400–1200 BCE, while the language of the text we actually have is usually placed several centuries later, and some scholars put it after 400 BCE. It survives in two recensions, a Ṛgvedic and a Yajurvedic, of different lengths. Its purpose was practical: to settle when a rite fell, by rule rather than by memory, the same question a pañcāṅga answers today, though not yet with the same five answers. The seven-day week is not in it.

  3. Āryabhaṭa · 499 CE

    The positions became computable.

    The Āryabhaṭīya held that the Earth turns on its own axis, as his commentator Bhāskara I read him, and as Brahmagupta attacked him for holding a century later. Its rotation counts work out to one turn against the stars in 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.1 seconds. The modern figure is 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.091 seconds. Not every number in that book is as good, and it would be cheap to show only this one, whose year is nearly three minutes long, but it shows what the method was for.

    Separately, and this is the part that reaches your chart: his longitudes are measured from a fixed point among the stars rather than from the equinox. That is why a sidereal chart puts your Moon and your rising sign somewhere a Western one does not.

  4. Varāhamihira, d. 587 · the Brāhmasphuṭasiddhānta 628 · Bhāskara II's Siddhānta Śiromaṇi 1150

    Six centuries of correcting each other, and of borrowing.

    The Pañcasiddhāntikā collated five earlier schools and preserved the ones it disagreed with. Two of the five say where they came from in their own names: the Romaka and the Pauliśa, carrying Greek and Roman material that had already reached India, along with the twelve-sign zodiac and a good deal of the vocabulary. The tradition was not sealed and never claimed to be, which is part of why it kept getting better.

    The Brāhmasphuṭasiddhānta set out rules for planetary positions and eclipses, and, in the same book, the arithmetic of zero. The Siddhānta Śiromaṇi worked in its school and refined it again. This is a working scientific literature, argued in public and revised, and it is the reason the definitions are precise enough to be programmed at all.

  5. Every printed almanac since

    And then the answer stopped travelling.

    The five limbs of a pañcāṅga are computed quantities, not listed ones. The lunar day is the Moon's distance ahead of the Sun in 12° steps; the birth star is the Moon's 13°20′ segment; the yoga is the two of them added and cut the same way; the karaṇa is half a lunar day. Four of the five are a position, reduced by division. The fifth, the weekday, is not; it is a cycle India took up in the early centuries of the common era and has counted ever since. But for most of that history somebody worked them by hand, from tables, for one latitude, and printed the result. A printed almanac is one town's answer to a question that has a different answer in every town.

What Kaal changes, and what it does not.

The definitions are the tradition's: the same segments, the same divisions, the same weekday tables. What is new is only the thing the tradition never had: the Sun and Moon computed to the second for the exact coordinates you were born at, and for the ones you are standing in now, by the Swiss Ephemeris carried inside the app rather than fetched from anywhere.

One number in the middle of it is not ancient, and we would rather say so than let you assume. Where the fixed zodiac begins is a choice, not an inheritance: Kaal uses the Lahiri (Chitrāpakṣa) value, settled by India's Calendar Reform Committee in 1955 and followed by most Indian almanacs since. The classical texts do not agree on it, and a different choice moves a birth star for anyone born near a boundary.

Nor is all of it equally old, and it would be cheap not to say which is which. The nakṣatras are Vedic. The five computed limbs are the astronomers'. Rāhu Kāla, Yamagaṇḍa and Gulika come from the later muhūrta literature, centuries after the astronomers above, and followed far more in the south of India than the north. Kaal computes them because people use them every day, not because Āryabhaṭa did.

That is also why the page above can invite you to check it. The tradition specified its arithmetic tightly enough to be programmed, though not so tightly that every almanac agrees. Sunrise can mean the first visible sliver or the disc's centre; the month can be counted from the new moon or the full one. Kaal picks one convention for each and names it, so two people who agree about where the Sun and Moon are, and about those conventions, must get the same answer. A claim you cannot check is only a claim. The sky underneath this one is a calculation, and the calculation is older than the phone it runs on.

Look at the line marked one eighth of the day. Every window is a fraction of your sunrise-to-sunset, so in Oslo in January it lasts 54 minutes and in San Francisco in July nearly twice that. An app that prints one national table has already got this wrong for almost everyone reading it. The same arithmetic runs on your phone, for your town, offline, and Kaal is matched to the minute in six cities on three continents.

How it travels

A match needs two people.

When Kaal opens, the compatibility reading needs a second chart. The app writes a link that carries yours: a birth star and its quarter, a rising sign, a Mars sign and your first name. Your birth date, your birth time and your birthplace never travel: they stay on the phone, and the chart is inside the link rather than on anything of ours.

Whoever opens it enters their own minute, gets their own reading free, and only then sees the eight threads between you. No account is made for either of you.

One caveat we would rather state than round down. If your friend opens the link in a browser instead of the app, which is exactly what happens when they do not have Kaal yet, that address passes through our web host's ordinary logs once, with the chart in it. A rising sign narrows a birth to about two hours. That is precisely why this is a message to one person and not something to post. So send it to the one person you would check first, and they will be there on the first morning too.

The part most apps skip

Your birth details stay on your phone.

That sentence is in the app, on the screen that asks for them, and it is meant literally. Here is exactly what it costs us to keep it true.

  • No account, ever. No email, no password, no profile, nothing that identifies you and nothing to sign in to. Morning reminders, if you turn them on, need three things: a random identifier your phone makes up, the Apple push token for your device, and the future times and window names to fire with. That is the whole of what any server of ours holds.
  • Your chart is never uploaded. The astronomy is computed on the device. Your birth date, time and coordinates do not leave it.
  • No contacts, no address book. Finding out which of your friends uses Kaal would require telling a server who your friends are. So we do not ask, and we cannot know.
  • An invite carries a chart, not a birthday. A birth star and its quarter, a rising sign, a Mars sign and a first name travel in the link. The date, the clock time and the place never do. A rising sign still narrows a birth to about two hours, which is why we call it a message to one person rather than something to broadcast.
  • No ads and no data sale. The business model is a subscription, which is the honest version of this trade.

  • Choose the day. Read any date ahead, whether a wedding, a signing, a flight or a first meeting, and see its hours before you commit to it. The rest of the month at a swipe, and further out on the date picker.
  • Ask why. Open any reading into the positions underneath it: which planet, which house, which window, and what the tradition makes of each.
  • Six people, fifteen matches instead of one. Your parents, your partner, the one you are not sure about, and every pair among them.

You are not charged until the free week ends. Cancel in iOS Settings, under your name, then Subscriptions, then Kaal, and do it at least a day before the week is out, because Apple can process a renewal up to 24 hours early. Before you ask

Ten questions, answered plainly.

When does it open?
Late 2026. You get one message the morning it is genuinely on the App Store, and nothing before it. If the date moves we would rather move it than ship an engine we have not finished checking.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes: Kaal will not read for you without it. The rising sign turns over twelve times a day, and in some places a new one begins in under an hour, and it is the whole of how you meet the world in your reading, and what the classical Mars check is measured from. The Moon moves too, crossing a quarter of a birth star about every six hours, and that quarter fixes your moon sign, which every transit is counted from, while the birth star itself carries most of the thirty-six points of a match. An app that lets you skip the hour has filled it in for you, and is reading you a chart that is not yours.
What if I do not know it?
Most birth certificates carry it, and in many countries a hospital or civil register will give it to you on request. If it is genuinely lost, we would rather you knew that than be handed a confident sentence built on a guessed hour. There is no “I don’t know it” button because there is nothing truthful on the other side of one.
Does it work outside India?
Everywhere. The astronomy is computed from your own coordinates, not looked up in a table, so a village with no entry in any database works exactly as well as a capital. Sunrise, sunset and every window that divides them are yours: the panel above shows a January day in Oslo lasting seven hours and a July day in San Francisco over fourteen, with every window inside them stretching to match. The app is in English at launch.
How is this different from a Western horoscope app?
Those read a tropical chart, measured from the equinox. Kaal is sidereal, measured against the fixed stars, so your moon and your rising sign will usually differ from what you have been told, which is worth knowing before you look. Beyond the system: every sentence here is derived from a computed position rather than chosen from a library of twelve; the tradition's hour-by-hour windows have no counterpart in the Western system at all; and the whole engine runs on your phone, with no account and nothing uploaded.
Where do my birth details go?
Nowhere. There is no account, no server that computes your chart, and no upload. Everything is worked out on the phone, which is also why it keeps working with the plane door shut. The full policy is one page and says the same thing at greater length.
Is any of this actually old, or is it marketing?
It is old, and the page names the texts so you can check rather than take our word for it. The birth stars are listed in the Taittirīya Saṃhitā, as star groups rather than as the equal 13°20′ arcs the astronomers later cut; the oldest surviving Indian work on reckoning time is the Vedāṅga Jyotiṣa, attributed to Lagadha, whose solstice back-computes to about 1400 BCE while the text we have is usually placed 700–400 BCE, two things often conflated into one date; and the arithmetic that makes the positions computable runs from Āryabhaṭa in 499 CE through Brahmagupta in 628 to Bhāskara II in 1150. What is not old is the ability to work all of it out for your own minute and your own coordinates, which is the part the app supplies.
Do I have to believe in astrology?
No, and Kaal is careful about the difference. The astronomy is computed and checkable, and we stand behind it to the minute, and that half is arithmetic. The reading is the tradition's point of view on those positions, offered for reflection rather than as a forecast of what will happen or as advice about what to do. Plenty of people read it the way you would read a good horoscope column and enjoy that the sky underneath it is real.
Is there an Android version?
Not at launch. iPhone first, because one platform done properly beats two done thinly, and the whole design depends on computing your chart on the device rather than on a server. Write in anyway if you are on Android: how loudly we are asked is how we will decide.
Is it free?
The daily reading is free forever, along with your chart, your year, one complete match and three people in your family, with no trial and no card. Kaal Insight is $49.99 a year, which is $4.17 a month and opens with a free first week, or $9.99 monthly. It buys planning further ahead and the reasoning under each reading.
